Dr. Maya Angelou told me

Dear indelible life-loving creator Sara, When I published my book Succulent Wild Woman in 1997, I asked Maya Angelou to endorse it. I met her at age 16 at my local library, when she came to speak about her book that I'd read; I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. This remarkable book and her remarkable life gave me the courage to tell her that I had been molested by my older brother. She took both of my hands in hers and looked me directly in the eyes, and said in her booming voice; "You are all right, you are all right!" These words infused themselves into my cells and convinced me that I was all right. Her book and her experiences with abuse had also convinced me. She had been mentoring me through her words- without having met me.  Many years later, when I asked her to endorse Succulent Wild Woman, she wrote this: "We, in this world, and this weary old world itself, have a great gaping need for SARK. Let's call for more and more SARK to fill every child's book bag and each attaché case."  This is what writing and sharing our words and stories can do- lift and illuminate another's life.
