Unexpected sweetness

Dear beloved human Sara,

Ten years ago, when my then-fiancé John was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, I decided to give up eating refined sugar.

I had long struggled with sugar and couldn't seem to eat it in moderation—ever. I tried to quit many times, and always went back.

Now it's been ten years without it, and I doubt I'll ever return.

I discovered that it wasn't the substance I was craving so much as the feeling—I wanted more sweetness in my life.

Poet and psychologist Marion Woodman once said:

"The longing for sweets is really a yearning for love or sweetness."

That idea lit something up in me.

I began wildly experimenting with this concept and realized I didn't need sugar at all to feel happy.

I wrote this in the 25th anniversary edition of Succulent Wild Woman:

Some things that feel sweet to me are: indelible kisses, extensive self-hugging, clean sheets, sudden spontaneous naps, voluminous reading, seeing babies' bare feet, eating mangoes naked, admiring flowers that make me gasp with their beauty, seeing slants of sunshine, soaking in lavender baths, and anything at all to do with kittens.

Here's to the expected and unexpected sweetnesses in our lives.

May we give them.

May we receive them.

May we be them.

Can you relate?

Do you want more sweetness in your life?

What feels sweet to you?

Let me know.
